Stay Alert When Driving Near Schools and Around Children

As parents struggle to get their kids to class in time in the morning and then rush to pick them up get afterwards, the areas around schools can get very busy. As a driver it’s easy to get distracted when time is a factor, and bad habits can take over. Don’t negatively affect your insurance rates with a moving violation or an accident and stay alert at all times when behind the wheel.

The Most Dangerous Mistakes Made When Dropping Off or Picking Up the Kids

Here are some of the most common mistakes made by parents and guardians dropping off or picking their kids up from school:

  • Dropping your child off on the non-school side of the street far from a crosswalk. This puts your kid in a position to potentially jaywalk. If you must drop them off on the “wrong” side, ensure they know to use the crosswalk and watch and wait until they are safely across.
  • Double parking in a school zone. This is illegal for a good reason. Double parking creates visibility obstacles for children, especially ones who might be tempted to dart out in front of double parked vehicles.  Double parking also causes other drivers to have to pull around the parked car with partially obscured vision, creating a dangerous traffic situation.
  • Speeding. Remember that since the beginning of 2016 all school zones in Calgary were re-designated as playground zones, and are now in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. every day of the week. This was to eliminate confusion for drivers and also take into account that often schools are used late into the evening, as well as the number of all-year schools in the city. There are still a few school zones signs left around Calgary that have yet to be switched out, but the new hours of 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. still apply.
  • Not watching out for pedestrians and cyclists. Kids are unpredictable, especially when they are with their friends, so be prepared to stop quickly at all times, especially when there are cyclists and pedestrians nearby.

Driving Defensively

Being a defensive driver doesn’t just mean that you are safe and conscientious. Driving defensively also means you are always anticipating problems before they happen. Don’t just slow down near schools and in playground zones. Keep aware of all your surroundings so that you are able to successfully predict unsafe occurrences. A citation for speeding or hazardous driving in a playground zone is high on the list of tickets you want to most avoid, and you certainly don’t ever want to be responsible for injuring another person.
